Mulch, Compost & Topsoil

Mulch

While bark mulch gives a fine finished look to any landscape or flowerbed that is far from its only use. Finely shredded mulch forms a barrier of sorts on top of the soil, suppressing weeds and retaining precious moisture in the soil. And who wouldn’t like to weed or water less? Like the forest floor, this mulch will eventually break down and provide added nutrients to the soil. And let’s not forget winter protection. A good 2-3” layer of mulch protects tender roots near the soil surface, and helps against wild fluctuations in temperature. Our mulch is pure bark, without large pieces of wood, which breaks down slowly, stealing precious nitrogen from your plants. WE DO NOT SELL DYED MULCH.

We sell three types of mulch in bulk,
either for pick up or delivery.

Mulch is also available in bags, one bag will cover about 12 sq. ft.

How much do you need? Calculate it.

For new plantings, we recommend a good 3” layer. This will compress to about 2” after a couple of months. 1 yard of mulch will spread over 100 square feet 3” deep.

Compost

It’s rich black color and slightly moist consistency is perfect for adding to our Champlain Valley clay or glacial Bristol and Lincoln sandy soils. Compost loosens dense clumps of soil, holds moisture, and provides and holds nutrients. We offer local Vermont Natural Ag compost and Intervale Organic Compost.

Topsoil

We mix rich native topsoil and silt, sand for drainage, and a healthy dose of compost. Screened twice, this soft fluffy soil is perfect for planting, establishing lawns, or even just plain hole filling. Weed free and easy to work, this is what we use while landscaping. One yard of topsoil will go about 80 sq. ft. 3” deep, due to compaction. Make it easy on yourself, assume 100 sq ft like mulch, and then multiply by .8.

Driveway stone is also available, call for more information.
